Several weeks ago I took Lance to the new DAN doctor that I found here locally for Jaden. Lance does not have autism but he does struggle with dyslexia, memory retrieval issues, facial tics and such. I wanted to see if there was any underlying medical reasons for his symptoms. Dr Worthington tested him for a lot of stuff and here is what came up:
Low in glutathione, several B vites, vitamin C and vitamin D. High oxalates in the urine, high strep titers--and because of some of his symptoms along with high strep the doc diagnosed him with Pandas. He also has slightly elevated liver bilirubin and the doc said it is a genetic condition called Gilbert's syndrome.
Since then we have added in a ton of supplements for him and he has responded like a champ! He has sensory issues and so cannot swallow big capsules. I open them up and put in a bit of grape juice. He swallows that nasty thing three times per day. He is a great kid! He is on a low-er oxalate diet with calcium citrate when he does have higher oxalate foods. He is on three weeks of an antibiotic for the Pandas. He is taking Milk Thistle for the liver and can never drink alcohol or take Tylenol.
I am so thankful that these things are treatable! It is still overwhelming to me to take care of Lance's needs as well as Jaden's. I cannot believe the things that can be wrong with our bodies, even when we think we are 'healthy'. I am praying for Lance, that in due time, these interventions will allow him to learn quickly, improve his memory and mood, and be just the thing he needs to be healthy and strong his whole life! I love my boy!!
