Doncha just love those books? Remember reading them as a child? I don't remember every detail of my childhood but I do remember someone reading them over and over and over and still wanting more. I remember the pictures most of all--all the details, knowing the cat was doing wrong and knowing Sam-I-Am was bugging too much, and anticipating how it would all end.
I tried to read these to my girl off and on through the years. She has not been very interested, at least for very long. But yesterday and today, after being on a new anti-yeast medicine for a week, she has brought me these books and really loves them! She asks me to read and read and when I finally tell her I really must get to boring things like laundry and dishes, she takes the books to her rocking chair and 'reads' them to herself. This is SO typical! In moments like these, I can almost believe again...
I mention that anti-yeast medicine because it is amazing to me that she really becomes a very typcial child when yeast and bacteria are under control. It is such a delicate balance, too, the timing and wisdom needed to know when and which medicine to use. Most of the time, my girl doesn't like books because her gut is so messed up, and it messes with her brain. But today, for today, my girl loves the Cat in the Hat and Green Eggs and Ham.
Off to read!

I followed your link on the haven to here. I have to admit that I've never read here before, but I am reading all of it right now. Ben is a July baby too. So your posts each month follow his chronological age pretty easy. I just have to subract 3 years. I'm about half way through 2008 right now. It has been encouraging and I want to thank you for doing this.
Shari
Shari, it is always so healing to keep record. I pray this blesses you and encourages you to do the same. I did read at your blog as well--your a great Mama!
Great blog, Bonnie. I noticed that you guys used the Hanen program too. We're going through the More Than Words program for Ben. They supplied the book and we're going to their classes.
I was curious what therapies you used for Jaden. Ben will be starting ABA in a couple of weeks, but I have been using a Floortime approach with him on my own. I just bought the book Engaging Autism and have been following his advice. I really don't see any particular "therapy" that his current teachers are using.
Hi Shari, the Hanen program is GREAT. Floortime is what we did (do, still when I am consistent) and ABA is great, too. If you have to choose, go with ABA. If you can do both, do both. The more therapy he gets, he better. Right now, Jaden is in Sped with a teacher who has worked with autistic kids for 20 years. I am not so fond of her approach (she is too firm in my opinion) but the kids seem to enjoy being in her classroom and they do learn. Then Jaden gets speech therapy and OT twice a week outside of school. She is about to start a social skills class, too, which she really needs.
Most of her improvements have come from seeing the DAN doc and implementing biomedical (diets and supplements, meds, etc) I wish we could afford ABA but it's not possible right now.
